When your baby is sleeping alone in a room, how can you make sure that the room temperature and humidity levels are comfortable for your child?
Parents often use baby monitors to check on the well-being and safety of their infants and toddlers while they are in a different room in the home. To help parents maintain a healthy home environment, designers can now easily create in-home baby monitors that include both relative humidity (RH) and temperature sensors. With these additional environmental sensing capabilities, parents can not only check their babies’ status via audio and video, but also keep the room temperature and humidity at comfortable and safe levels. Adding new RH and temperature sensing features also gives embedded designers an opportunity to differentiate their baby monitoring applications with more features and higher performance.
How can designers create a baby monitor that provides superior RH and temperature sensing?
There are several design challenges when developing a baby monitor with RH/temperature sensors. Silicon Labs’ award-winning Si701x/2x sensing products combine both RH and temperature sensing in one small monolithic integrated circuit compared to the legacy discrete sensors on the market. When developing a consumer-based product like a baby monitor, the bill of materials (BOM) can be a challenging factor for designers. Legacy RH sensing solutions use discrete resistive or capacitive RH sensing elements along with analog circuits for temperature compensation and signal conditioning. This approach results in a higher BOM count and cost than a design based on the Si701x/2x sensor family. In addition, Silicon Labs’ RH / temperature sensors are fully calibrated and in surface-mount technology (STM) packages to ease manufacturing.
A baby’s skin and respiratory activity are more sensitive to cold, hot, dry or humid conditions compared to adults, and accurately measuring all these aspects in a room environment is especially critical when designing a baby monitor. The Si701x/2x sensors come pre-assembled with an optional unique protective cover that protects the RH sensing element from contamination. Keeping the sensor clean and undamaged ensures high reliability throughout the lifetime of the product. The sensor family also offers higher accuracy over a wider range of relative humidity (max ±3.0%) and temperature (max ±0.4°C) than legacy discrete sensors.
The Si701x/2x sensors’ active mode power consumption is up to six times lower than competing RH sensors without compromising performance. This means that parents don’t have to worry about recharging the baby monitor’s battery as often as with other alternative designs. In addition to offering ultra-low power consumption, the sensors’ tiny QFN package (3mm x 3mm) is ideal for space-constrained baby monitor designs.
